What $9.13 buys in Wyandotte County

Kansas City, Kansas holds its first Black Restaurant Week Sept. 7–13, eleven kitchens running specials priced at the area code. Here is the lineup, the four dishes the organizers' own page ties to a restaurant, and what two of them cost the rest of the year.

Kansas City, Kansas holds its first Black Restaurant Week from Monday, September 7 through Sunday, September 13, and the whole promotion turns on one number. Participating restaurants are to run specials priced at $9.13 (the area code, printed as money), leading into 913 Day, the Wyandotte County celebration held every September 13. By its organizers’ own account, 913 Day was created in September 2020, after 816 Day across the state line, and has been organized since 2021 by The Toolbox: Small Business Resource Center. The Unified Government and Mayor/CEO Christal E. Watson have issued a proclamation recognizing the restaurant week, per KCTV5.

Eleven Black-owned kitchens are on the list. This desk’s only standard is the seller’s own published promise, so what follows is the lineup exactly as the organizers posted it, what the dishes cost the rest of the year where a published price exists, and what is not settled yet.

The lineup, as posted

Captured from 913day.org/BlkRestWeek on September 2 at 5:41 p.m. and re-checked September 4 at 9:07 a.m., when the page had changed. Addresses are the organizers’ where the page prints one and KSHB 41’s where it does not.

Three more dishes are posted on that page without a restaurant attached to them in any way this desk could read: “5 Drummies & Fries,” “Fish Po’ Boy Sandwhich & Fries,” and “3 Wings OR Burnt End Slider w/Fries OR Beef Polish W/Fries.” They belong to three of the seven kitchens above, and the page does not say which. They are printed here unassigned rather than guessed at, and the question is one email to info@913day.org.

The third one is new. On September 3 at 2:40 p.m. the organizers added that dish, and two minutes later they added Turkey Leggman’s Quindaro address — the first time the page carried it in its own words rather than KSHB 41’s. Both arrived after this desk’s first capture and are in the table above. That is the fourth time the page has been filled in since it went up August 12, and it is the reason every line here carries the hour it was taken.

A blank in the third column is a statement about a web page on September 2 and nothing else. It is not a statement about a restaurant, a menu, or whether a kitchen is participating. Five days out from an inaugural week, a lineup page still being filled in is the ordinary condition of a lineup page. Call the restaurant.

What two of them cost the rest of the year

The comparison only works where the seller publishes a regular price for the same thing. Two do.

The math

Holy Smoke BBQ: “Sausage & Fries,” $9.13

  • 1/2 Sausage Link, mild or spicy: $9.59 · holysmokebbqkc.com/menu, captured Sept. 2, 5:47 p.m.
  • French Frys: $4.00 · same menu, same capture
  • Bought separately at menu price: $9.59 + $4.00 = $13.59
  • Against the special: $13.59 − $9.13 = $4.46 less, or 32.8 percent off, if the special is that half link. The page does not say what size sausage it is. Ask at the counter.

Wilson’s Pizza & Grill: “Large 2-Topping Pizza,” $9.13

  • 16” X-Large One Topping Pizza Special: $17.99 · allmenus.com (Grubhub mirror), captured Sept. 2, 5:48 p.m.
  • 16” X-Large 3 Toppings Pizza Special: $19.99 · same menu, same capture
  • A two-topping pizza at a size called “large” is not priced on that menu, and “large” is not defined against the 12”, 16” and 18” sizes it does list. No subtraction is available, and this desk is not going to interpolate one and call it a discount. The two numbers above are the nearest published neighbors and are printed so a reader can see the neighborhood the $9.13 sits in.

Q13 Sports Bar & Grill and John’s Java & Jazz: no free published price list was found for either. Their delivery-platform menus refuse an ordinary request.

The Holy Smoke number is the one clean piece of arithmetic in the promotion, and it is a real one: a third off, on the restaurant’s own posted prices, for a week.

Before you drive

Holy Smoke BBQ is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which is September 8 and 9, two of the seven days. Its posted hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday (holysmokebbq.menufy.com, captured Sept. 2). Six of the other ten kitchens post no special yet and several keep short or shifting hours; the lineup page carries no hours at all for anybody. Every restaurant on the list has a phone.

The cheaper way, if a week of $9.13 lunches is more than the budget: September 13 itself. The organizers’ own page says many Wyandotte County businesses run $9.13 offers on 913 Day, and it is a Sunday, and it costs nothing to walk Quindaro, Central Avenue or downtown KCK looking at what is open.

Where these addresses are

Four of the eleven — Wilson’s at 1801 Quindaro, Turkey Leggman at 1916 Quindaro, Ms. R’s Café at 720 Quindaro, and Fast Fred’s Market at 1806 N. 18th — sit in or beside the stretch of northeast Kansas City, Kansas that spent the last two weeks of August clearing the August 18 storm. This paper covered that corridor three weeks running, most recently the concert in Wilson’s own parking lot on August 30 that raised $1,740 for storm recovery against a $1,500 goal, per KSHB 41.

That is a geographic fact and not a pitch. The week was scheduled long before the storm (the lineup page went up August 12), and nobody has claimed the two are connected. They are simply the same blocks.

Sourcing: the lineup, dish names, six of the addresses and the $9.13 price point are from 913day.org's own Black Restaurant Week page, captured September 2 and archived. The full eleven-restaurant list with addresses is KSHB 41's, reported by Rachel Henderson; KCTV5 (Julia Scammahorn, September 2) reported the same week and listed ten of the eleven. Prices are each restaurant's own published menu, captured September 2 and archived with checksums. Dish names are printed exactly as the organizers wrote them. What this cost us: nothing. Nothing here was comped, no meal was accepted, no visit was announced in advance, and no restaurant on this list was contacted for anything but a price. Prices move; every number above carries the hour it was taken. If one is wrong, or goes stale, write and we print the correction.
