Privacy — The Stare
Privacy
The short version: we don't track you across the web, we don't sell your data, and no other company gets to watch you while you're here.
What we don't do
- No third-party analytics. No Google Analytics, no pixels, no fingerprinting, no session recording, no ad tech. No outside company measures you here.
- No ads. Nothing on this site auctions your attention.
- No cookies from us. The site sets zero cookies. Your light/dark theme choice is stored in your own browser's local storage and never leaves your device.
- No third-party requests. Fonts and all assets are served from our own domain. Loading this site tells no other company you were here. One scoped exception: the tip form loads Cloudflare's CAPTCHA on that page only, to keep bots out of the tip line — and tips are stored without your IP address, on purpose.
- No data brokering. We don't sell, rent, or hand your data to anyone. Whatever the site knows stays with the site — it is never packaged up for another company.
What necessarily exists anyway
- Our own story counters. Original Stare stories report anonymous counts to our own worker: that a view happened, roughly how long the page stayed open, which outbound link was clicked, and the name of the site that sent you (the site's name only — never a full address or search terms). No cookies, no identifiers, no IP stored — the numbers are totals and cannot be tied to a person.
- Infrastructure logs. The site is served by Cloudflare, which — like any host — processes standard request data (IP address, browser type) to deliver pages and block abuse. We don't build reader profiles from it.
- The headline feed. Fresh Wire headlines load from our own worker at the same provider. Same story: served to you, not used to track you.
- Email. If you write to us — a tip, a correction, anything — we keep the email, because that's what a newsroom does with its correspondence. Want to write to us without identifying yourself? Here's how.
- Outbound links. Wire headlines link to the original publishers. Once you click out, their privacy practices apply, not ours — and theirs will usually be busier.
If this changes
If The Stare ever adds a newsletter, accounts, ads, or starts sharing anything with another company, this page changes first, in plain language, before that launches.
